Conflict: Desert Storm II Review

Conflict: Desert Storm II is the latest in a long line of military-based FPS’s that gives you weapons, assigns you a team and tasks you with something simple, like saving the civilised world as we know it. This specific FPS is set at the height of the 1991 Gulf War. Your mission, should you

choose to accept it, is “to strike at the evil Iraqi dictator's fascist regime.” Your team can be hand picked either from the SAS or Delta Force.

You can play the game both from the First Person and Third Person perspective. The game is split up into 14 demanding missions, each of which takes place on huge levels. These levels are very detailed and really capture the atmosphere of Iraq. You’ll come up against fanatical soldiers in every nook and cranny, even on the easiest setting, which makes it impossible to run-and-gun. This is not Quake or UT; you can either use your team well or die time and time again. The enemies you face do occasionally behave like lobotomised zombies but are adequate fighters overall. They will take cover when fired upon and can use the terrain to their advantage. Treat them with respect or your tour of duty might just end up with you in a coffin/bodybag. Thankfully, the missions do not involve any intricate planning phases that are as long as the game itself, as in the Rainbow Six series. Once you become familiar with the setup, you should have no difficulty controlling your team. The actual control setup is standard FPS fare and should be mastered in no time by most gamers, especially considering Pivotal were kind enough to include four tutorials.

When you first start up the game, you’ll notice that the visuals are among some of the best in games of this genre. Your squad has been modelled perfectly, right down to the swaying of their backpacks as they run for cover. Small little touches like the dust clouds kicked up by the treads of enemy tanks add to your immersion in the game. The audio effects are just as phenomenal and really place you right in the streets of Baghdad. Right down from the mechanical sound of gunfire to the screams of the “evil Iraqi dictator’s” soldiers, the effects could not be more realistic. Perhaps the only black mark against this shooter is the lack of any kind of multiplayer. I’m not a MP aficionado myself but I have to admit that lack of it in a title of this kind does limit gameplay. This is not a game that can be replayed often and an online option would have increased its value. Still, it is a solid FPS, and will definitely give you several hours of pulse-pounding fun. Recommended.
