Star Trek Elite Force

Star Trek Elite Force Review

There are a few unwritten rules in the gaming universe. One of the oldest was that all games with a Star Trek theme suck. No exception. Unless you were a rabid Trekkie who thought that ST: The Next Gen was a brilliant program, chances are you hated every Trek-based game out there.

This was true until Raven Software came out with ST: Voyager - Elite Force. Here was a shooter from the Star Trek universe that appealed to everyone! Needless to say, the game was a hit. Which ensured a sequel.
Elite Force II is a fast paced, pleasing shooter that will satisfy not only Trekkie fans but also all gamers who love FPS’s. You play the role of Alex Munro, leader of the hazard team, a heavily armed squad that is hand-picked to deal with the most dangerous of situations. The game begins on a Borg sphere, which ties in with the final episode of the ST: Voyager TV series. When you complete the mission, the team is disbanded and you are given a teaching assignment at the Starfleet Academy. After two years, Captain Picard brings the team back together, which is when the real game begins. An alien race destroys a Federation Star-ship and a nearby space colony. Naturally, the team is sent to eliminate the bad guys and save the universe!

EF II makes use of the aging Quake III engine. While the game is not as eye popping as Doom III, it does feature excellent graphics with crisp textures and convincing models. The game runs well even on lower end machines, which is a bonus. The game’s only real problem is its Artificial Intelligence. Both friends and foes act as if they have severe brain defects. Your allies do not hesitate to block your fire with their bodies while your enemies can only move left and right. That’s it. No fancy dodging moves as was so brilliantly done in Half-Life. The game also has excessive loading times which can get irritating after a while. Thankfully, it has varied missions and also some unique twists, thanks to its scripted sequences. At times you’ll be called upon to defend certain characters while at other times you will have to sneak around obstacles on a one-man mission. Between combat missions, you can wander around the Enterprise or test new weapons in the virtual reality Holo-deck. There are several secret areas and alternate paths that you can find during your missions, if you explore. The single player missions are well crafted and offer tense, exciting gameplay. When you finish the single player game you can play online against other humans or computer-controlled bots. There are four modes of play: Deathmatch (called Holomatch in EF II), Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, and Bomb Diffusion (Each team tries to blow up the other’s base).
Ritual set out to make an entertaining game and they’ve succeeded admirably. The game features good graphics, great voice acting, a compelling story and satisfying game-play. Ritual has managed to take everything that was fun in the first game and make it better. If you’re a fan of Star Trek or a FPS enthusiast, this game is worth a look. If you happen to love both, then this is the game for you.

HIGHS: Good Plot, Cinematic Effects,
LOWS: Bad A.I., Annoying Loading Screens.
NUTSHELL: A Competent Shooter
