assume the role of Wolverine for the X-Box, PS 2 and PC. After discovering that a deadly virus has been activated within your bloodstream, you have 48 hours to acquire the antidote from the evil organization that not only gave you the disease, but also your mutation. You are Wolverine, an X-Man, the world's most dangerous mutant.
The game opens at the Weapon-X facility in the late 1960's, where you are implanted with an unbreakable admantium skeleton and a razor-sharp set of retractable claws. The Weapon-X program wants to make you into the world’s most lethal killing machine. Predictably, you rebel against your guards, destroy pretty much everything and escape the facility. The game then moves to the present day, where Dr. Hank McCoy (Beast) finds out that you’ve been infected with the Shiva virus and have only 48 hours to live. Your only hope lies in Department H of the Weapon X project facility. On the way there your plane crashes, leaving you wounded and alone. You have to fight your way to the Weapon-X facility where you face your destiny... The game features lush environments like the snowy Canadian wilderness, the Weapon-X facility, a high-security prison, a forest filled with mutant hunters and an industrial steelworks in which almost everything can be destroyed. Along the way, you team up with familiar friends like Professor Xavier, Colossus, and Beast who assist you in fighting super-villains like Sabre-tooth, Wendigo, Juggernaut, Omega Red, and Magneto.
Naturally, you get to use all of Wolvie’s mutant powers, including his admantium claws that slice your enemies. Since you’re working mostly alone, you have to employ stealth to infiltrate heavily guarded locations. If you set off alarms, you can pull off some spectacular Wolverine combat moves to save your ass. Besides the normal punches, kicks, leg sweeps and evasive moves you have several “strike moves” that can cause some major disaster! When you’re surrounded by enemies, you hit the strike button to let loose a move that destroys them all. You also have a "feral" rage meter, the more enemies you kill, the more your rage meter fills up. Once you activate it, you move faster and injure enemies more. If you manage to kill enemies in stealth mode, you receive bonuses such as "dog-tags" that increase Wolverine's combat rating, which gives you new super-powerful "strike moves”. You can also collect health and rage enhancing canisters but the best extras are the un-lockable costumes and character information.
Unfortunately, the game has several frustrating elements. The worst part is the difficulty level which makes the game-play tedious. You’re not allowed to pick up or use any of your dead enemies’ weapons. The camera is jerky and unresponsive. Add to that the fact that most enemies, even the unarmed ones, can block your killing claws with their arms and legs! You’re Wolverine, for God’s Sake!! The final nail in the coffin is the inability to skip cut-scenes. The PC port is even worse than the console releases because it features horrible controls, bugs galore and every PC gamer’s pet hate - save points. This game is nowhere as good as previous super-hero titles like Spiderman: The Movie. If you’re a die-hard X-Men fan and have always dreamt of stepping into Wolverine’s boots, then buy this game. Otherwise give it a miss.
